This is a stepped steel shaft - the customer calls it a star shaft. It's turned to several diameters with a bore in the top end, a long milled slot down one side with a couple of cross-holes, and a cross-shaped tang machined into the foot. We turned the diameters and the bore, milled the slot and the tang, and drilled the holes. After machining it was nitrided through our finishing partner, which gives it the dark, hard surface you see here.
